The Executive Career Path:
5 Tips to Help You Advance in Your Career in Senior Leadership Roles

by Sonja Price

Summary

It might be tough to know where to start if you want to work in executive management or a corporate leadership role. Many individuals begin their careers in entry-level jobs and advance up the corporate ladder, but this method may be time-consuming and difficult. Furthermore, it can be tough to land a job as a senior professional or C-level executive without the right aptitude and expertise. To advance further in the executive career path, you must demonstrate a capacity to make a large impact and manage teams effectively. The five tips outlined in this article will help you do just that!

Do You Want a C-Suite Executive Role or a Senior Management Position?

It can be difficult to know how to position yourself for a career in executive management or a corporate leadership role. You may have started your career in a lower-level position, and worked your way up the corporate ladder, yet you may still be having a challenging time getting recognized for the right types of roles.

Maybe it's been a long time since you've received a promotion or you're just not getting the right types of promotions, but ultimately you're looking to kickstart and/or accelerate your executive career path and you're not quite sure what to do and how to get the process started, or how to optimize the process that's already in play.

Additionally, without the right skills and experience, it can be difficult to obtain a position as a high-level professional or even a C-level executive.

You need to show that you have the ability to make a big impact and lead teams effectively.

This article will outline the top five things that you can do to get recognized plus outline some of the core strategies for moving your career path forward to quickly becoming an executive.

What Does it Take to Become a Senior Level or C-Level Executive?

Becoming an executive can take time, patience, and a lot of hard work. It doesn’t happen overnight and it certainly doesn’t necessarily come easy.

In order to make it to the top of the corporate ladder, such as a C-level executive position, you need to be able to demonstrate your skills and prove that you are capable of leading others.

You also need a strong work ethic and dedication to your career.

How Do You Advance Your Executive Career? Here Are Five Tips:

Tip #1: Start With a Clear Goal in Mind

What is your end goal? What level of position do you want to reach? Once you have a target in mind, it will be easier to create a plan of action to get there.

Stay ahead of the curve. In order to stay ahead of the competition, it’s important to always be learning and keep up to date with the latest trends in your industry. Read trade journals, attend conferences and network with other executives who can teach you what you need to know.

Tip #2: Get Management Experience in Different Areas of Business

Trying out different roles across many departments will help you develop a well-rounded skill set that can make you more marketable for senior positions.

BTW - It's not just about developing skills, it's also about making sure that you're getting the right exposure for the good work that you are doing. So make sure you're producing high-quality, solid results, and then make sure that key decision-makers and key influencers are well aware of the good work you are generating for the organization.

It's also an excellent idea to tie your results back into the overall key initiatives for your organization or department. Be sure to showcase the specific KPIs and how you are helping to move the needle.

If there are new areas you'd like to get involved in, speak with your manager about taking on additional responsibilities.

IMPORTANT: Remember, not only do you need to produce incredible results, you need to ensure that your results are being seen by the right people!

Tip #3: Be a Decision-Maker and Communicative Leader, Not a Follower

Take on leadership roles whenever possible, which might mean you need to volunteer for new opportunities beyond your regular day-to-day activities. As you take on more responsibility, people will start to see you as a leader and potential successor.

This will give you the opportunity to showcase your skills and abilities. As much as possible, try to take on new roles that allow you to flex more strategic and higher-level leadership skills.

Leaders also demonstrate that they have both proven decision-making and communication skills. They are able to make decisions quickly and effectively, and also communicate those decisions to their team in a clear and concise way. This makes them effective leaders who can get things done and keep their team/s on track.

If needed, be sure to run decisions past more senior leaders or other stakeholders before moving forward. This will show that you are a collaborative professional who includes other key individuals.

You will want to make quick decisions and/or make recommendations that influence stakeholder buy-in towards a final decision, then take action, and cause quick results. Be sure you are building a reputation as someone who gets stuff done, without ruffling a lot of feathers in the process. You do not want a reputation for being a renegade leader who doesn't include others. That strategy might work as a short-term strategy, but no one wants to work with people who don't play well with others, and it will be difficult to have staying power. You will also want to ensure you are evaluating and mitigating all the potential risks along the way.

Leadership skills are essential for advancing your career. Be a leader in your field by taking initiative and being proactive.

IMPORTANT: Don’t be afraid to take risks and challenge the status quo, but also make sure you are including all the relevant stakeholders in appropriate ways too.

Tip #4: Network, Network, Network!

It's important to expand your professional network with people who have the power to make decisions and influence others. Furthermore, you must be able to show off your experience with the abilities that executives consider essential.

If those in your field can see these things, they will give you acknowledgment and respect.

Networking with other executives is one of the most effective ways to advance your career. Attend industry events, meet with colleagues for coffee, or join a professional group related to your field. The more people you connect with, the more likely opportunities will become available to you.

Connecting with others in your field can help you learn from their experiences and find mentors who can guide you on your executive career path. One of the easiest ways to build lasting relationships is by offering to help or adding a meaningful contribution regarding something that really matters to your contact/s.

Also, don't forget social media such as LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a powerful networking tool that can help you connect with other professionals in your field, learn about new opportunities, and even get your foot in the door for executive-level roles.

Tip #5: Stay Motivated, Stay Focused, and Stay the Course.

The executive career path can be challenging and demanding, but it’s important to stay motivated and focused on your goals. Set aside time each day to reflect on why you want to achieve success and what steps you need to take to get there.

Visualization techniques can be very helpful to help you stay the course and manifest your biggest dreams. It takes time and effort to move up the corporate ladder, but if you stay committed to your goal, you will eventually reach the top!

Bonus Tip: Take Advantage of the Next Promotion

When the next promotion becomes available, you should already be the leader that existing decision-makers automatically think of you as the "go-to" person for the role you are best suited for.

To best accomplish this, you'll want to continuously position yourself in a way where key decision-makers will find themselves saying "You know what? Cynthia is already working on these types of projects and has produced some really great results in these areas. It would be silly for us to offer this strategic opportunity to anyone but her."

Whether it's an actual promotion or they're just giving you access to more strategic-level projects, you'll gain that experience and will have the results to show for it. Then you know you have the background to be able to help advocate for yourself and ask for a promotion or move on to another company and find the right role for you elsewhere.
